The Audiobook Production Process
I've directed dozens of audiobooks over the last few years, and really enjoy the process. For those who like literature, it can be a truly rewarding livelihood.
The audiobook production process is complicated, with a lot of steps and decision points along the way. Choosing the narrator, tone, and recording process are all crucial decisions. Preparing before the recording sessions is critical to a successful and smooth-running production process. And dialog editing and mastering during the post-production phase are also critically important.
Though it is not about synthesizers or electronic music, I decided to document my experience in making audiobooks here. If you are interested in audiobooks as a living, whether as a narrator, a voice director, or recording engineer, then this video is for you.
Here is the excellent audiobook production software I discuss in the video:

Nick Peck - Live Serge Performance | Coaxial Arts 12-16-23
Переглядів 3835 місяців тому
This is my performance at an all-Serge concert at the Coaxial Arts Foundation in Los Angeles on December 16, 2023. I used my two-panel, all analog Prism Circuits Quasar system, made up of early-70's era Serge circuits. The Quasar ran into a Strymon Timeline Delay and an Eventide Space Reverb, and that was it. Improvised in real-time, using patches I had created over the previous couple of weeks...
The Serge Modular Synthesizer - History, Theory, and Application

I hope that this lecture is a useful springboard to those who are unfamiliar with it. Long...

The moment I found out that a modernized version of the famed PPG Wave was being produced, I knew I had to take the plunge and buy one. Although the 3rd Wave is primarily thought of as a modern-day replica of the PPG Wave, it has far more ca...

I grew up on analogue (at Maison Rougue strudios - Studer A820's with Dolby SR) and used one of the Sony 3324s but hated it - very clinical sounding. But I did a session in the late nineties on a Radar and was impressed, it had a nice full sound, not the thin digital I was expecting, and of course looked and worked like a 24 track tape machine. I was doing brass session and of course, when they completed a take I could go straight into record again. The session players complained as they were out of breath for the next next take. They would usually use the time it would take for tape to spool to get their breath back! The owner of the studio loved it as it he would occaisionally smoke pot and if he dropped in by mistake, he could just undo it... I use Cubase on a PC now and it would be great if someone could come up with a hardware PC solution all in one to run a DAW. Their are good options out therebut all revolve aroundlatest WIndows OS or whatever, which has it's issues. A gap in the market perhaps?

The Olivetti Lettera 32 was my first and best typewriter I used as a high school student. I liked using it instead of handwriting some of my homework assignment papers, since 1969. Unfortunately, my typewriter was stolen from my apartment that was burglarized on March 18, 1977. I miss my Olivetti Lettera 32 more than the "expensive" Kenwood stereo receiver. There were some high school papers in my typewriter case. That made the loss of my typewriter heartbroken, even today in 2024. Your story is great. It touches my feelings like nothing else could touch.

This was just a series of Mr Chamberlin's anecdotes, which he managed to spit out between chewing his gum. The history of the mellotron, its increased use by prog rock bands, its introduction to the Beatles by the Moody Blues keyboard player Mike Pinder, when the Moodies were on tour with the Fab 4 in the UK in 1966 (& who just happened to have worked as trouble shooter for Streetly Electronics, makers of the mellotron), will have to wait another day. As will the fact that that the tsunami of double tracked string sound, much loved by prog rockers, was first introduced by the Moody Blues and their engineer Derek Varnals at Decca, on their core 7 albums. Try 'Out and In' (1969). There, that's just an outline, but still more of a history of the mellotron than on this video...............

Very interesting! :D I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Richard Wright recorded his second solo album (Broken China) with one of these. I'm using a Pro Tools HD system, but luckily, I don't have internet connected to my Mac, I don't ever quantize, don't have autotune and if a note happens to be way out of tune, which almost never happens, I just use a pitch shifter to lift it up/pull it down a bit, but usually I'll just re-record the tiny bit and only use a pitch shifter when I can't play it better.

Wow you’d swear you had brain surgery….i can’t imagine taking a general anesthetic to do this minor procedure (which it is). I had mine done yesterday with a local nerve block. It took 25 minutes in total including questions. My bandage was put on too tight, so it was relief to remove it before bed. I have Steri-Strips and a bandaid over the incision. I’m off work for 2 weeks and I don’t need any more pain meds today. Not even a painful procedure, it was uncomfortable at best and performed in the minor procedures department as opposed to wasting time and resources using an anesthesiologist, operating room staff, an operating room (where it would take longer to strip, clean and set the room back up for a true surgical case). Hopefully you are amongst the last of patients who get the option of general anesthesia for such a minor procedure.

The Beatles already used it! the first Beatle to have contact was drummer Ringo Star! And they immediately decided to take it to the Studio. The use of Mellotron is clear on the albums, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band from 1967 and Migical Mystery Tour from 1968. Without a doubt, The Beatles were the precursors of Progressive Rock!

Its cool that youre not bashing PT. IMO, tho AVID can KISS MY CHEEKS. You HEAR ME AVID? KISS MY CHEEKS!! They had our class teacher install protools ultimate on over 25 computer, half them wouldnt open. All the students also were required to purchase their own copy... And in some cases studenta were required to buy TWICE because their original install didnt work properly. Also you dont purchase it, tou "rent" it, because its all subscription. This is not to mention the ENDLESS Error dialogues. Every single action has errors. No audio manipulation was learned. Entire class became ProToolsTroubleshooters. Just googling foruma and youtube videos. Customer service is nonexistant in Avid.

*I BOUGHT A LITTLE PORTABLE MANUAL TYPEWRITER* last week for typing names on garment labels - I played around with it as an alternative to my 27" iMac I discovered something amazing - it used a completely different, quieter, deeper thinking part of my brain. For me its not the distraction fee - I have very little clutter on my computer and no pop ups - its something about the MECHANICAL process that 'hacks' my brain. I bought an Olympia SG 1 1958 which arrived yesterday - Im fascinated by this new development in my life.

The author of this video told of incidents of considerable, and some excruciating pain, but I wanted to tell you that my recent carpal tunnel release surgery had way, way, way less pain that what was described here. My surgeon used a tiny scope to do the ligament cutting, rather than the open method. I had it done on both hands at the same time. It involved a cut on my wrist that was about 1/4" long. No stitches, and the cut was closed with glue. On day two after surgery, I was allowed to remove the bandage (except the glue) and shower normally. Today is day two, and I have almost no pain as long as I'm careful not lift anything heavy. My hand tells me if I shouldn't be lifting something. There is no stiffness in my hand. I am ecstatic. It's too soon to tell, but the improvement is so quick that I can imagine getting back to near normal in a week or two. We'll see.
